In February 2005 I was 21, recently dumped, and living in a new city where I knew exactly one other person. It was depressing. To cheer myself up one night I got very drunk at a Le Tigre show and, several whiskeys later, I sort of wanted to marry the band. So much so that I sent my best friend in Arizona this text:
“Kathleen Hannah makes me want to spell woman with a y.”
My friend minored in women’s studies. She liked my joke. After while it became part of the fabric of our friendship.
Now, I’ll admit, I never took a woman’s studies class. But in the three years since that text message and the start of this blog, I’ve done a lot of thinking about women (and womyn) and my place as one. I started wondering if I was a bad feminist because I like to wear heels and my boyfriend makes me happy and I believe in the vaginal orgasim.
I was actually very worried about it for a while. Until my same Le Tigre loving, woman studying friend told me, “As for being a ‘bad feminist,’ I’m not sure if that is even possible. Feminism is a huuuge umbrella term that includes schools of thought from the most conservative to the most liberal perspectives.”
Whew. So, I’m not a “bad feminist.” And this will not be a bad, feminist blog. In fact, I doubt I’ll really write much about the f-word at all, though pretty much everything I write will certainly be informed by it. Just thought you might be wondering.

I love you to death!!!!!! Death!!!! (Not to be morbid) I’m so honored to have made a cameo in your blog. Maybe someday I will actually write something in mine (probably not until my professor forces me to).

Except of course, for Sarah Palin, right?

Hi Rachel –
I’m not sure if you’ll check back to see my answer, but I do feel compelled to respond.
It’s interesting for you to make the assumption that I dislike Sarah Palin for anything more than my sharp disagreements with her policy/political ideals.
I’m always happy to see another woman succeed, but when choosing politicians to represent me, I don’t vote gender, I vote policy and I’m just not down with Palin’s (or, more importantly, McCain’s.)
Thanks for reading!
