I knew I was right about “Sex and the City.” And Blanche (er.. Rue McClanahan) from the “Golden Girls” agrees with me:
“‘The Golden Girls’ has infinitely more substance,” McClanahan says. “I never enjoyed the characters on ‘Sex and the City,’ and I could never watch it for more than a few minutes.”
I know, talking about SATC is so over. But I was still happy to read this tiny justification of my thoughts in the New York Blade. (Though at first I was really confused and was totally like, “wait, Blanche is gay? So I Googled, “Blanche from Golden Girls, gay?” and figured out no, she’s just a gay icon.)
Earlier this summer, right when the movie came out, I wrote about how much I did not want to go see it. The only time I got more responses to something I wrote on the Internet was the time I declared that I hated “Juno.”
I’ll admit, there was one really bad semester where I couldn’t get off the couch and pretty much all I did was watch SATC. The shows mindless banter got me through for sure. And yeah, I identified with certain situations, though I found all of the characters insufferable at times (Carrie and Charlotte most of all.)
But in a lot of ways, the show bugs me. The characters are at once miserable and painfully lacking in self awareness. They’re pretty much just caricatures. It always bothered me that the show seemed to imply that one can not have the extreme libido of Samantha, the intelligence of Miranda and the desire to find and commit to one person that Carrie and Charlotte were always whining about.
It’s sad that thousands (millions?) of women in my age group seriously turned these characters into their role models.
But, I’m probably taking a cotton-candy show way, way too seriously. Turns out, I take everything way too seriously.
Anyway, the point is, I totally agree: “Golden Girls” did have more substance. And — I’m gonna say it — better outfits!
A clip for ya’ll after the jump.
Check out Rose’s suit. I. Want. It.

Stop thinking of SATC as a Nat Geo documentary and more a Moliere play.
I think you may have met one to many chicas with mammary glands where their brains should be and so are concerned for your species. Its commendable.
When taken with its wait in salt, its really just The Powerpuff girls hook up with Loveline and have a gay baby with amazing hair and accessories. How can you not enjoy that?
